The Penny Cars Stadium is once again the midweek destination for Mark Roberts’ side as we make the short journey along the M8 to take on Ian Murray’s Airdrieonians in our penultimate Betfred Cup Group F tie.
After promising performances against Premier League Hamilton Accies and Championship Partick Thistle, there is an air of optimism in the Spiders camp ahead of the league campaign kick off a week on Saturday but first of all, we have two very difficult cup ties to get through, starting with an Airdrieonians side who put three past Clyde at the weekend.
Ahead of the Airdrie match the club media team caught up with the gaffer to get his thoughts.
Looking ahead to the game he said: “We’re expecting yet another very difficult match, as we have already had in the previous two cup ties. The reality is, is that we would need to win both remaining games to have any chance of progressing, and with that in mind we are likely to set up in a more attacking style than we have played against Accies and Thistle.
“With Lewis Magee and Tommy Block both missing through suspension we’ll need to change things up a bit. I was delighted to re-sign Ciarán Summers earlier in the week and there’s a good chance he’ll feature. Cammy Clark has done great at left back since coming in, but he also gives us options in other areas of the park with his versatility, and that will be of huge benefit to us this season. With the exception of the enforced changes we’re not likely to shake things up too much more.
“We know it’ll be a tough 90 minutes and having watched Airdrie at the weekend we know the quality they possess. We once again go in as underdogs, but we know if we work hard and show our quality, we’ll give ourselves a chance.
Commenting on the rebuilding job of the squad Roberts said: “I’m very pleased with where we have got to so far and I believe the new faces have really freshened things up, which I felt was required. I’m hopeful of adding another to the squad in the coming days and we’ll see where we are if that comes off but looking throughout the team there is healthy competition for places and that’s the most pleasing aspect for me.
