For the second consecutive week it’s a derby match for the Spiders, this time Albion Rovers providing the opposition as they travel Hampden on Saturday afternoon. Those who witnessed last week’s defeat at Broadwood will be all too aware of the need for the Spiders to be far better at the back and that was the message from the manager as he spoke to the club media team following training on Thursday night.
Roberts said: “We had a good chat both following the game on Saturday and then again at training on Thursday night about the importance of cutting out the silly mistakes in defence which have been so costly to us and the players know what is expected of them in that regard.
“We expect Saturday to be a really tough test for us, and as the weeks progress, every game becomes that bit more important. People will look at the fixture, see Albion Rovers are bottom of the league and presume we’re strong favourites but the outcome is far from a given. We need to go out and earn anything we are to take from the game and it won’t be easy.
“They had a positive result last week and under Kevin Harper have improved. We have had them watched a few times so have an idea of what to expect, but as I said, we need to ensure our work rate and application is spot on as they’ll be well up for the game.
“From our perspective, as well as having to defend better, we must start being more ruthless in front of goal. We cannot continue passing up chances that we are creating.
“I would say that we are going into the game in a good frame of mind and I’m delighted that the squad will be bolstered by the return of two mainstays in that of Gerry McLauchan and Lewis Hawke. They are vital players for us and we have missed their presence in recent weeks.
“It’s my belief that if we are close to our best then we are good enough to be taking something from the game and that would be excellent in terms of kick starting he second half of the season for us.”
The opposition: Kevin Harper’s side currently sit bottom of the pile in League Two, eight points adrift of ninth placed Berwick Rangers. Rovers have won just one league match all season, drawing three and losing the other 13. They go into this match on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Annan Athletic last weekend. Scott Forrester had given Rovers the lead inside the final ten minutes, but they were unable to see the game out and David Wilson’s 86th minute goal for Annan ensured a share of the spoils at Cliftonhill.
