It’s derby day at Hampden on Saturday as old foes Clyde make the short journey down from Broadwood for the League Two clash. The Bully Wee have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season under Danny Lennon and sit just three points off top spot.
The recent form of both sides going into the game could hardly be more contrasting, Clyde having won their last four matches and the Spiders having drawn one and lost their last three. An outsider looking in could be forgiven for thinking that the outcome is a certainty, but as Queen’s have shown on plenty of occasions in the past, you’d be a fool to write them off and that was the message coming from Mark Roberts as the club media team spoke to him on the eve of the match.
Previewing the game Roberts said: “There’s no two ways about it, we need to get back to winning ways and we need to do it sooner rather than later. It’s vital that we end the run of defeats that we’ve suffered in recent weeks.
“From our perspective in terms of looking for a reaction from the players to the recent defeats, we couldn’t have asked for a better game. The derby element adds a little bit of edge to it and the players feel they have a point to prove. They know this is a tie which the supporters look forward to and they will go out, under no pressure from my point of view, look to make the most of the magnificent surface at Hampden and play the way we know we are capable of.
“Equally, we know that this is a game which Clyde will also be well up for and they too will be looking forward to the opportunity of playing at the National Stadium. Their form speaks for itself and they are third in the table on merit.
“That said though, it’s our home game and there is an onus on us to go out there, compete and look to take something from the game.
“I thought our performance for the majority of the first half last week at Elgin was more like what we should be expecting and we’re be looking for the players to reach those standards tomorrow and on a consistent basis. It goes without saying that we need to start being more ruthless and clinical in front of goal when creating chances as failing to do so in recent weeks has cost us. We also need to tighten things up at the back and again look to be more ruthless when forced to defend.
“All things considered we will go into the game in a confident frame of mind and will look to take something from the game.
Roberts confirmed that there won’t be much change to the squad at his disposal to that which he had at Elgin last week with Gregor Fortheringham and Dean Kindlan the only additions. Roberts did however hint that although Kindlan will be included in the squad, the game may have come too soon for him to feature.
The Opposition: The Bully Wee go into the game sitting third in the table, five points clear of fourth placed Annan, and just three points off the Edinburgh City who occupy the top spot. Danny Lennon’s men go into the game on the back of four wins on the bounce with the most recent of those victories being an impressive 3-2 away win over Berwick Rangers. Having found themselves 2-0 down at the break, two goals inside the opening eight minutes of the second half draw them level before Abdelkarim Belmokhtar’s 92nd minute goal won the match.
