The Spiders return to Hampden on Saturday as League Two’s in form side, Edinburgh City come calling. The Citizens sit top of the pile following an impressive start to the season and will undoubtedly be relishing the opportunity to play at the national stadium for just the second time in their history.
Ahead of the game the club media team caught up with Caretaker Manager, Mark Roberts to get his thoughts on the tie.
Roberts said: “It’s going to be a real tough test for us against a side that are top of the table and there on merit. Edinburgh City have been in very good form so far this season and from the reports we’ve had, they have caused teams plenty of problems. They may be a surprise package to some, but they have a squad with some real quality in it.
“Having said that, we go into the match looking to take maximum points. I’ve only been at the club for a short space of time but I’ve been very impressed with how we have applied ourselves in both home matches during my time. I felt we dominated those matches, albeit not getting the result our performance deserved in the Cowdenbeath game.
“We are very aware that Saturday will be a real challenge and have spoken this week at
training of the importance of the squad showing a positive reaction to the defeat at Stirling Albion last Saturday. We cannot afford that type of performance against Edinburgh City and the players know the onus is on them to compete from the first minute and to win first and second balls, something which they know they let themselves down by not doing.
“It’s been a strange week for the club with the departure of Gus but that does not change our focus. It’s now up to myself, the rest of the backroom team and the squad to pick ourselves up and do the business on Saturday afternoon.
Despite there being little let up to the lengthy injury list that has plagued the squad at this early stage in the season Roberts was delighted to confirm that centre back Gerry McLauchlan, who has missed out against TNS and Stirling Albion , returns to the squad, having taken part in both training sessions this week, coming through them unscathed.
Whilst McLauchlan’s return is a welcome boost for the defence it comes on the back of bad news for Cammy Foy, who has only recent returned from long term injury, and picked up another injury during last week’s game at Forthbank. Roberts confirmed that the initial prognosis was not good but indicated that the full extent of the injury has yet to be established as the club awaits the outcome of scans.
