Perfect weather of a game of football. Still, cool but dry. Our 20s took on Queen of the South on Monday night in the SPFL Development League West.
Queen of the South sit top of the table with 27 points from 11 games. The Spiders are in 5th place with 9 points from 9 games. The last time the two teams met, in October, Queen of the South won the game 2-1.
Queen of the South started the game on the offensive , confidently moving the ball about and keeping Queen’s back in their own half.
In the 7th minute Queen’s, against the run of the game, went one up. Lewis McGee played a long ball over the QOS defence. Joe Manderson stepped onto the ball, drove into the QOS penalty box and fired a low shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net. An excellent well taken goal.
17th minute QOS should have equalised. Their number 19 drove through the middle , played in their number 7, who beat the Spiders’ defence ended up one and one with the Queen’s keeper but pushed the ball outside the far post.
Queen’s were playing the long ball behind the shaky QOD defence with effectiveness.
One or twice they got in good position but just couldn’t get the goal.
In the 28th minute QOS equalised. A corner from the right was played into the Queen’s six yard box. The QOS number 6 beat everyone to head the ball into the corner of the net.
Half time: Queen’s Park 1 Queen of the South 1
The second half started as the first finished. A very high tempo game with both sides fighting for possession.
3 minutes into the second half QOS took the lead. Their number 7 had the ball 16 yards out wide left of goal. He hit a shot which rebound back to him. He then looped a shot high over the Queen’s keeper and into the far top corner of the net. Either a superbly accurate lop or a lucky strike.
Both team continued to battle for possession. QOS were dominent in midfileld, Queen’s bypassed the opposition midfield by continuing to exploit the wide open space of Lesser Hampden by using the long ball behind the defence for forwards to run onto.
Full time: Queen’s Park 1 Queen of the South 2
QOS deserved their victory and their top of the league position. Their midfield dominated the game and were resilient under the pressure of the Queen’s forwards. The young Spiders certainly played a very high tempo game but still lacked that killer touch in front of goal.
