It’s the home comforts of Hampden for the Spiders for the second successive week and everyone in the Queen’s Park camp will be hoping for a result similar to that of last week when Morton visit Hampden on Saturday. Our reward for squeezing past Partick Thistle Colts 6-5 on penalties in the last round of the Irn Bru Cup is a tough third round test against the Championship outfit.

Those who watched last Saturday’s confidence boosting 1-0 win over Livingston will be keen to see if the Spiders can reproduce last week’s form and fighting spirit, and if so, to see if that may be enough to see us progress passed Morton and into the draw for the fourth round. Gaffer Gus MacPherson will be no different.

The club media team spoke to the Manager of the eve of the Hampden clash to get his thoughts on the victory last week and to preview the Morton game and an optimistic MacPherson said: “I though thought the win over Livingston was fantastic. We are always respectful to the opposition and gave Livingston the utmost respect going into the game. We were very aware of how well they had started the season and that they had been scoring freely in their previous games. We knew that we needed to be at our best, that we had to work hard for each other and that we would need to show a real fighting spirit in order to take something from the game”.

“I’m delighted that we were able to do that and to have taken three points from the game was extremely pleasing. I was especially pleased for the players and supporters, it gives everyone that little bit extra belief this early in what is going to be a long and challenging season”.

Looking ahead to the visit of Morton on Saturday Gus said: “For me these are the bonus games and they are reward for success in the earlier rounds of the competition. It will undoubtedly be another difficult game for the squad, Morton are a very good team with a good squad of players. The may have lost heavily to Hibernian last weekend but that was their only defeat in nine competitive games so far this season”.

“We know that it’ll be a challenge but it’s one that our squad is ready for. The players have shown already, early on in the season that they’re ready and up for the tests that will come their way and this Saturday will be no different. It’s a game we are looking forward to and one that we go in to in a confident frame of mind”.

The gaffer confirmed that he goes in to the game minus the services of a number of first team players as Liam Brown and Josh Watt join long term injury casualties Gavin Mitchell, Jamie McKernon and Tony Quinn on the side-lines. There was however some good news on coming from Lesser Hampden this week with the announcement that goalkeeper Willie Muir has re-joined the club following a brief spell at East Fife.

Commenting on that news a clearly happy Gus MacPherson said: “We’re delighted to welcome Willie back to the club. As soon as we were made aware that he was available we made contact and it was a very easy decision from both the clubs points of view and Willie’s, for him to return. Willie appears delighted to be back and I’m sure he’ll do well in amongst familiar surroundings”.

The opposition: Currently sitting 8th in the Championship, Morton join the competition at this third round stage. They go into the game on the back of a 4-0 league defeat to high flying Hibernian at Easter Road last Saturday. Prior to that they had two 1-1 home draws against Dumbarton and Falkirk.
